If we get stuck and don’t know what the next move is, it might be high time that we do a reset and go back to the basics. Maybe, we’ve been stressing out ourselves lately and has been causing the martial arts school harm rather than development.
It’s time to simplify things and stop overcomplicating them.
In this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon wants you to evaluate where you are and where you’ve been at considering the state of the martial arts school. He emphasises the importance of putting the why, the gratitude, and the love at the centre of your objectives. Discover today how to use Gordon’s 100-formula and how you can duplicate it regularly to expand your MA school.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
What’s going to make the most significant difference in your MA School? According to Gordon, it’s teaching your students well and making sure that once they exit the doors, they’ve improved their skills.
How do you work your 100-member formula? Plan the four programs you’ll offer; each program shall have at least 25 students. Work out the schedule and the resources you will need.
If you end up being burnt out, go back to the basics... Why are you teaching? What joy does it bring you every time you put your time into it?
Have gratitude. Be grateful for every single member that you have. Stop wasting energy on those who have already left or those who refuse to see the value they’ll get from your classes.
It’s nice that it has become easier to market through social media, but getting attention through print media, or person-to-person invites also has excellent impact in expanding your MA school.
BEST MOMENTS
“It’s always the basics that get the biggest results.”
“Sometimes, overcomplication will stop your growing. If you keep it simple, you’ll grow exponentially.”
“We can be so focus on building the school that we forgot about the gratitude, where we started, the enjoyment, and the love.”

Times are different now, students have a lot of choices to do in their free time or if they just want to explore a new hobby. It has become harder for the martial arts schools to retain their students lately.
So, in today’s episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon gives powerful retention tips for your MA School. We already know how difficult it is to attract the students to enrol in our classes so we must put double our efforts to keep them interested in your services. And, not only do you retain your students, but you also gain new students. One thing’s clear though if you give them the best that you can offer (e.g. great lessons, helpful community, etc.), then there’s no need to worry about the future of your MA School.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Always provide excellent quality service. It does not matter if you offered a martial arts lesson for free or not. They have to get what they came in for – to learn. When they get what they want, they come back for more, and they are most likely to recommend it to others. Your service needs to outshine everyone else’s martial arts lessons.
How do you do your onboarding process? Gordon highly advises that you make sure that your students or their guardians are informed and pre-framed before they go through the classes.
Have a meeting with the parents/guardians and the students and ensure that you tell them about everything they need to know about what’s going to happen before, during and after the lessons.
The relationship of the dojo master, the parent, and the student can be likened to the 3 vertices of the triangle which has the strongest and most stable structure.
Give things for free and offer excellent paid packages that will help the student enhance their talents.
Make sure that you get the feedback of every student/parent’s student so you know where you can change and improve stuff.
Recognition in classes. A simple tap on the shoulder, a high five, or a thumbs up could really lighten up the mood and invigorate the positive energy in the room.
You can send birthday cards when it’s student’s special day.
People come to you for these reasons:
To get positivity
To have fun
To be lifted/energised
To sweat
BEST MOMENTS
“Great customer service will retain people in your school for sure.”
“They have to understand the importance of sticking to it martial arts and how martial arts is a lifelong journey.”
“Recognizing people in classes will absolutely allow you to retain more members for sure. People want to be loved. People want to be liked. People want to be recognised.”
“Building relationships with your members will not only retain, but you will also gain – you will gain more referrals, more sales, etc.”

When someone comes in the doors of your martial arts school, make sure that you get it done, and you close the deal.
In this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon discusses the importance of selling and closing deals so that you can make more money. Selling is serving. When your martial arts school is sustainable enough, you could offer more services to more students. Discover today some tips on how to attract people to avail your courses and not push them away. If someone’s interested in taking your classes, selling them the best you’ve got. He reveals what he does to increase the number of students that come in his school so make sure to tune in.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Gordon, like most, also feared to learn about selling. There’s the fear of rejection so we tend to push people away before they even know what they could avail and benefit from.
Making money in your martial arts school so you can reinvest them on new and improved services that you offer each time. At some point, he realised he was giving too much free stuff away in his martial arts school – he was giving too many free lessons and was not sustaining the school anymore.
Learn the art of closing people. Don’t let people who you sell to make excuses or change their mind. Be consistent and emphasise how much value they’ll get.
As a leader of your school, you have to teach your staff how to interact and sell to those who come in.
Tips on how to attract and not push people away:
Use great questions. Once you meet and greet them, build a rapport. Ask questions about their interests and their kids’ interests.
When you offer your flexible packages, listen to what they have to say and then hand over a pen to suggest that they sign the papers and close the deal. Offer to make the measurements of the student’s suit early on.
When you do this, you don’t let them think twice.
Don’t create time gaps. Get in the flow.
(1) You need to assume that they’re going to join your school. (2) You need to have faith in your products and services. (3) When it comes to closing the deal, just be confident. When you’re confident, they will follow.
BEST MOMENTS
“Teach what you want to teach but understanding the skill of sales is very important.”
“You can learn to be great at sales while serving other human beings.”
“You need to assume, and have faith in your product and what you charge. You must be confident that they’re going to avail it because it’s good value.”
“The more you practice, the better you get.”

‘You can listen to this and do nothing, or you can listen to this and apply it now. You’ll create
more freedom and feel better about yourself’
Gordon explains how he has learnt to create more time by being disciplined and focused. If you feel there is never enough time to get things done then listen in and act now to create systems and the consistency that you need to move your business to the next level.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
If you can get more out of an hour or a minute then you can get more out of your MA business.
If you can be more disciplined with your time you will be able to realise your hopes and dreams a whole lot faster.
Working in your own head is never a smart way to work. Get a digital diary so you can compartmentalise your day and become efficient with your time.
Put things that you do every day on repeat and make sure you have reminders set.
Create a log of your time and put down what you do every 30 minutes, in doing this you will be able to see where you are wasting your time.
Most people are reactive to other people contacting them throughout the day. If you compartmentalise your day and choose a time when you respond to people then you are in control and maximising your time efficiently.
You have to create the plan, the diary, and you must stick to it.
Sometimes you have to be disciplined on the things you don’t want to do and doing the thing you don’t want to do first in the day ( ‘eating the frog’) is a successful approach to being disciplined and achieving more.
It is important to stay focused on the task in hand and get into a state of flow so that a project can be completed successfully.
You’ll create more time by being more structured and organised. You can manage yourself and be a disciplined person who is in control and not reactive but proactive.
Consistency is absolutely paramount to success It takes 28 days to embed a habit. Make your diary a habit.
It's vital that you create systems and consistency in your business.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Not having enough time comes up so much when I’m talking to school owners, it’s frightening’
‘Time it’s so precious and you can’t get it back’
‘I promise this will work magnificently for you’
‘When I did this, I realised I was wasting hours every day messing around on social media’
‘Things interrupting you, choose to manage yourself or you will be controlled by others’
‘Consistency creates habits. Habits create success’

‘There is a longer game to play, you have to resurrect those old prospects that seem to be dead and buried. You’ve got to be constantly marketing all of the time.’
How many potential customers do you have on your lists that you haven’t converted?
In this episode, Gordon tackles how to nurture the prospects you are leaving on the table and convert them to customers. He explains why these prospects are so valuable to you and how you can get them over the line successfully, listen in now and get started today!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
You’ve got to continue to revisit your database, this is a better route than moving to market cold contact lists.
If it is a cold contact you’ve got to work so that they know something about you and how you operate. If you are revisiting a prior prospect you will have already had contact with them they will know who you are.
How many people through your marketing have already contacted you via different platforms but have not gone onto to join your martial arts school?
Building a list, a prospect pipeline is vital.
Think about how you can create lead magnets to enable you to capture data.
It’s not the list that is the ultimate goal it’s what you do with it converting prospects into members.
Email list - The object of a list is to nurture those prospects. You can provide them with value by sending them shares, video clips, tips and tricks.
Make sure you are sharing and adding value in your email list by asking great questions and providing opportunities for them to reply and engage with you.
Phone list - Phoning people is where you get the connection. You should be working on this list every day. Most school owners will leave this list until last because it can seem daunting, but it is through talking to people that you have the opportunity to build the most rapport and potentially the best conversion rate.
Work on the communication aspects, it can take 3 to 6 months to really nurture someone, but you have to remember the value they will bring when they join, they might bring other family members and be members for an extended number of years.
Through marketing you’ve created the want and the need it's just in the background you need to do more nurturing to get them over the line.
BEST MOMENTS
‘What would happen if you worked your lists consistently every day and nurtured those prospects?’
‘Although it's painful you’ve got to do the things that are necessary to get a better result, so get on the phone everyday’
‘The majority are sitting on the fence and they need your nurturing to get them over the line’
‘You’ve got to be constantly marketing all of the time’
‘It’s just an email and it's free and you might wake some of these people up’
‘You should be working on individuals on the list until they unsubscribe or actually say ‘no thanks, I’m not interested’

Tips in Managing and Growing Your Staff In Your Martial Arts School
Most (if not all) successful business owners have the best and most effective team along with their side.
Today, Gordon gives us incredible tips on how to build, manage, and grow the team/staff for business owners. Gordon, himself, has led a great team in his businesses. The beautiful thing is despite his team being small, he and his staff have managed to stay on track and head on in the right direction of their martial arts school’s vision. Gordon emphasises that allying the right team behind you can give you the freedom you need in your business. Discover today, how you can manage your staff effectively and teach them to get the best results for your business without compromising each individual’s growth.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Gordon manages a team of 10-15 people in both his businesses, business mastery and martial arts school. He has built this fantastic team, and it takes a long time to develop that. He has also made mistakes with them, but that’s part of the learning.
It’s such a big help if the team can help you with the business’ operations (e.g. marketing, sales, etc.). You focus more on your passion and objective which is teaching martial arts to more people.
Build a team and the infrastructure that will let your business’ status stable and secure even if you step back from it. This gives you the freedom to enjoy your lifestyle or strengthen your visions.
Top tip: Make your members do the role that they love, and don’t ever overwork them.
As the business owner, you should know what their skill set is. You can make assessments every 3 months. Sometimes, what they think their skill set is, is not necessarily what their skill set is.
Tips in managing and growing your staff:
Motivate and inspire your staff.
Don’t tell them what to do, teach and guide them to get the results that you want. Understand their style of learning.
Empathise with your staff. You see them every day, so it’s better to know and understand them. Respect their values, opinions, choices, etc.
Be adaptable as a leader.
Find out what they want.
Crate accountability for your staff.
Recognise how valuable they are.
BEST MOMENTS
“Building a team is the one thing that will give you freedom above everything else.”
“Building a business, as in like you are doing it, is okay. Building the staff team is a completely different piece altogether.”
“You know from the action that they take, from the work they do, and from the results they give you, how good they are.”
“Being a great manager is not telling them what to do, it’s managing their expectations… it’s managing them as people – nurturing them, making sure they’re on point.”
“Step into people’s model world without judgment.”
“Recognition is so important when you want to build up your team.”

If you know nothing about the key elements needed to manage a successful Martial Arts School, then you will FAIL.
Today on the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon ensures that your martial arts school will be the best in your area and financially successful. There’s no room for failing especially if you want to grow your students to impart more martial arts knowledge and skills.
Discover the success formula; all you need are three things: planning, discipline, and execution. Gordon dissects these three so listen in now. Just make sure that you’re willing to do the most boring tasks to the most interesting ones when you want to really be successful.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Success starts within yourself. If you have the right mindset and the drive to do everything consistently.
Always have a plan. Your plan is what is going to get you where you want to go – your goals. Make it detailed as much as possible, may it be short-term or long-term.
In order to realize your plans, you should have the discipline to start and continue doing what needs to be done – from the easiest to hardest, from the smallest to the biggest.
Observe and learn from your business’ past and current situation. Have a look at what you want to change and improve. Plan for future sales, marketing, lead generation, services, etc.
The most important thing is you are disciplined to do everything regularly. If you have to do every single day, do it. Small disciplines daily will create magic in your business.
BEST MOMENTS
“It actually comes down to one thing and one thing alone… that is yourself. Absolutely, what are you doing with yourself?”
“If you don’t have a plan where you want to go, you will never be going to get there.”
“You need to break down individually what you need to do each and every single hour of every day.”
“Discipline is doing the things that you should do even though you don’t want to do them.”
“It’s the small things that get the big results.”

Who says you can’t earn more money from your martial arts school while you maintain high teaching standards?
Don’t let them get to you.
In this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon gives you great tips on how to make more money from your martial arts school. You just can’t rely on the tuition that your students pay since that won’t be sustainable in the long-term run. If you really want to make a greater impact and reach more students, then you better learn various revenue-making strategies. These have been proven to work according to Gordon. From holding events monthly to releasing your resources online, there are so many ways you can market and sell your services. Tune in to know more.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When Gordon does his personal trainings, Masterminds, teaching, etc. in different schools/dojos, he has always noticed that there are hardly any members.
Gordon suggests that when you’re running a martial arts school, you have to look at it as a business. You have to make money so that you can start marketing and get more members. In this way, you get to be more impactful to more people.
Don’t focus on tuition alone. You’re going to struggle because it’s not sustainable in the long term. Prepare income projections for your business every month which is separate from the tuition.
Tips on how to earn more money from your martial arts school:
Create a monthly workshop at your school. You can charge as little as 15 GBP per attendee and still earn income for your school. Just be consistent that you do it regularly and make sure that the newbies improve their skills every time they go back.
Sell goods. If you promote and market it right, they’ll want to buy and actually wear them.
Put your resources (videos, syllabus, etc.) online. Make it accessible by anyone.
Offer package deals and discounts. Give them a variety of programs they can choose from.
BEST MOMENTS
“In any business at all, you need to make money to survive. For so many years, the martial arts industry has turned his nose up to making money in martial arts, especially in the UK market.”
“You can’t transform lives if you don’t make money. There are so many martial arts schools out there that are absolutely not moving forward for so many years because they’re stuck in the mindset of… They’re trying to grow their school but they don’t have enough money to do it.”
“Marketing is always an asset.”
“You got to concentrate on earning more money but still teach quality martial arts.”

LEARN TO LEAD YOURSELF
In this episode, Gordon provides us with an insight into the vital importance of understanding and learning to lead yourself so that you can be an effective leader of others.
If you want to understand more about how to be a leader who can successfully influence others listen in now.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The Importance of being a leader
Being a leader is not only about leading others but also about learning to lead yourself.
Human beings are not always good at leading themselves and it is easier to lead others forward telling them how to do it than it is to look to lead yourself.
Work harder on yourself than you do on anything else
Work hard on changing how you see your students, the way you are, the way you react and how you see life and then everything around you changes.
It always starts with you.
Many people around the world are focused on changing circumstances, changing what has happened, changing other people. You can’t change other people you can only change yourself and how you react.
Fundamentally we are in control of our destiny, we have the power to choose what happens and how we react to any situation.

Real leaders understand and strive to learn, to evolve, to make changes to grow and learn every day.
In your business, you are the biggest barrier to the business moving forward
You must learn to lead yourself and lead others through what you do.
Ask yourself frequently - What do I need to change to get to where I want to be?
You may need to step outside of yourself and look at where you want to be, stop getting on your own way and move forward to realise your dreams.
