‘These questions are a great way to really understand the type of customer you want and how to make the changes that will attract them to you’
Gordon is live, in this episode, with 5 questions that every martial arts school business owner should be asking themselves.
The power of these questions lies in how they encourage great dialogue and inspire growth and development for moving forward in your martial arts business. Listen in and find out about the ‘5 simple questions that get great results’

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Great questions get great results, ask yourself ;
Who do I want as a customer?
What kind of person do you want to see in your martial arts centre, what is your demographic, what does that person look like, what are their values, what do they want?
Once you have decided on the type of person you want you will be able to target and attract those people.
2. What needs to happen for them to buy?
What does your school need to look like? What should the environment and service be like?
What needs to happen to make a connection?
What do you need to change to have the right type of environment for the demographic you are targeting?
3. What must happen to keep them buying and interacting with your school?
You need to continually innovate and create new services for your existing customers.
It serves them and provides more opportunities for them to buy from you. They want to buy from you, the more opportunities you provide the better you are servicing the customer.
4. What  could cause them not to buy?
What could cause them not to join, not to buy your products, not to continue and buy courses?
Repeating the same thing could be a reason as all humans enjoy the attraction of new things.
Understanding why people may not buy will tell you what you need to change.
What do I need to change to attract better customers?
Change is about evolution - evolving and developing. If we don’t change we are going to get left behind.
What are we not doing now that we need to do to attract a better customer?
Quality attracts quality, people don’t buy based on the price they buy on the value they perceive it to be.
Understanding your customers is a great way to get clear on what you want, what you need, what must happen and what must continue to happen.

BEST MOMENTS
‘You’ve got to get very clear about the type of customer you want’
‘What do you need to do, to change, to innovate to cause them to want to buy from you’
‘From change comes change and if you keep innovating and evolving, improving what you are offering then you will attract the customers you want in your school’
‘It’s about making your business effective, optimising and maximising it’

Gordon talks to Ivan Rolls, the creator and developer of ‘Bullied To Black-Belt’, a course of instruction designed to help bullied youngsters who may be having trouble dealing with the mental aspect of being bullied.
By examining his own legacy, and by reflecting upon his own experiences, Ivan came to the realisation that by instilling the core values and principles of martial arts into children, he could help shape a healthy, confident generation; one able to stand up to bullies not just for themselves, but also on behalf of others.
Key Takeaways
Ivan began in martial arts as a child, attracted to the discipline and routine of martial arts training, dabbling in a few different disciplines and honing his skills over the course of his adolescence.
Despite his martial arts training, Ivan found himself repeatedly bullied as a child, and found the mental aspect of this bullying increasingly difficult to deal with. Martial arts training often teaches that your training is not to be used in these situations.
Ivan was subsequently instructed to see his physical symptoms of fear not as detrimental, but signs that adrenaline was rising; literally a physical readiness growing inside him, and designed to allow him to deal with the bullying.
Changing the perception of martial arts is crucial, not just for youngsters, but also for parents, who may see brief examples of violence and fear that it is a detrimental pursuit. But martial arts also teaches patience, discipline and commitment.
By constructing a well-designed package of materials for not just students but educational environments, Bullied To Black Belt aims to demonstrate that bullying is a negative force, and that it can be defeated by celebrating everyone’s unique qualities.
BEST MOMENTS
"I like working out what works, or what REALLY works”
“You’re not scared. That’s adrenaline. It’s a magic chemical designed to help you deal with that situation”
“I remember walking out of that conversation feeling like a superhero”
“Actually you can defend yourself”
“Mindset is everything”
“It’s a win-win-win-win-win!”
“Martial arts are the answer”

Summer can be a challenging time for many martial arts training business owners. Members can be on holiday, intent on relaxing more and exerting themselves less, or suddenly facing issues such as childcare. This can leave your member lists suddenly depleted, and classes a little emptier than usual.
But by following Gordon’s advice and adopting a few simple strategies, you can creatively ensure that your classes remain full, and that your student’s enthusiasm remains high!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Summers can be a challenging time when it comes to member retention. Many see this period as a time to relax, a time to take a break from active pursuits and indulge in some leisure time. This can negatively impact energy levels, motivation, and personal development.
Change your timetable - A useful strategy during the summer is to flip your timetable completely. Make it more fun, and more of an event-centred syllabus that students won’t want to miss! Most importantly, once you’ve worked out how you’re going to make your timetable more fun, share it everywhere in advance!
Create a reward system - Create attainable goals that involve their attendance, such as awards for completing a certain number of classes, that will spur them on to make attendance a priority.
Create off-site training - If the weather looks like it’s going to be nice, how about taking your class out to a park or local recreation area? this can create a social event that you can’t otherwise access as families are usually spending more time together during summer. It can also help you to advertise your classes to people who might not know about it.
Parents Only Evenings - Parents are usually starved for free time in the summer. Why not add social events to parents-only classes such as movie screenings? This can be very attractive to parents who need a social outlet.
Make sure that you create training for when people are away - Creating your own training videos and sharing them on social media, can give your unavailable members a crucial sense of connection that they may be missing.
Daytime Camps and Summer Camps - Creating seasonal camps is a very powerful way of ensuring retention across the holiday period. Again this can alleviate the responsibilities of parents in a huge way in the summer when they may be desperate for some time for themselves.
BEST MOMENTS
"In this crazy, fast-paced world, people are inclined to pick up and put down far too easily”
“Lots of games, lots of fun, lots of invention!”
“Create that FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)”
“Can you imagine how much fun that’s going to be for your students and your team!”
“Be creative. Make it fun. Make it something that they want to attend”
“A winner never quits. A quitter never wins”

Matt Chapman Interview

Friday Jun 14, 2019

Friday Jun 14, 2019

Gordon Burcham interviews Matt Chapman, owner of MittMaster online course. Matt Chapman talks about how he challenged and pushed himself to do something more different than a regular Martial Arts lesson or course and take it online. He talks about how it enables accessibility for those keen to learn Martial Arts. It also aids potential and willing instructors to create online courses, all prepared and trained with the help of Matt Chapman. He specifically talks about the capability of putting one's life's work in terms of teaching and coaching on video and leaving behind a legacy forever. Moreover, the online module has helped people generate extra income. Also, people of a certain age who are unable to move out and have been Martial Arts teachers, have got the opportunity now to continue teaching online and have security during old age.
Key Takeaways
- I have taught Martial Arts since the time I left University. Did that for about 19 years and after that felt like I needed more of a challenge. So, I sold my school and moved on to teaching online and helping other Martial Arts instructors to teach online.
- We did not have to do too much of marketing and I have been teaching for 25 years. I could have gone down to licensing and franchising. My passion is part training, inspiring and why not do that and do what I love? So, I took the jump.
- For the MittMaster I create programs for instructors to use. I create programs that benefit martial arts instructors that they can use in their schools to improve their attention and improve their lessons. Also, the online programs serve as a supplement for school and home lessons. It has proved really popular.
- I am worried about the old martial arts instructors who do not have any pension, no savings. It means they have to teach until they die. For the ones who don't that and want to take some time off when you are 70, for example, you need some other source of income that does not allow you to go to class and teach, I try and encourage them. It is good to have that 500 to 1000 pounds coming in every month, just online.
- The legacy thing is a big thing. A lot of martial artists believe that their students is going to be their legacy. The moment they stop teaching the students will split and find their own ways and developments of doing it. The only way to preserve what you teach, how you teach it, is to record it on video.
- Get a decent smartphone, a tripod. Stick that in your gym, press record, go out, teach what you going to teach. Do a little bit of editing on your phone and that's it. You have content. There is a site called Thinkific, which allows you to create online courses. You can have an online course in 3 or 4 hours and upload it on the internet and sell it to your students who are other martial artists for the rest of time. It's so easy.
- Martial arts don't care about the production value. They just want the technique. You don't need transitions. It's just me teaching the camera like I would teach a class.
- I offer a range of products to help Martial Arts instructors to do this. One option is when are really good with technology and can work out yourself like with a webinar. The second option is where I come and visit you. If you are in the UK I catch a train and I'll sit down with you for a day and we'll plan out, build it, by the end of it you'll have your first course built. All you'll need to do is add your video content for free. The third option is if you are really busy I'll build it for you. You tell me what you want, you give me the pictures, the sales copies if you have any of that and you give me an idea of what you want. I'll build it for you, it takes me about seven days. I'll hand it over to you and show you how to use it. You have your online course done.
- The online thing has allowed me a lot of free time now. One of the things I want to do is help charitable causes, build charitable websites. People want to do a lot of good in the world, but they do not know how to build a website. Any of who have an idea or a charity they want to set up, they can contact me, so that I can build them a website and they can get presence and start doing good in the world.
- If people want coaching which then they can act on, I can help them do that.
Best Moments
"You are leaving your legacy, you are leaving your life's work online forever."
"The only way to accurately preserve, what you teach and how you teach is to record it on video."
"The content is where the value is."
"Martial Arts don't care about the production value, they just want the technique."
"Short term pain, long term gain."

If you’re still stuck in traditional marketing strategies, then it’s time to sit down and re-evaluate if they’re actually giving the best outcomes. For your Martial Arts School to start skyrocketing, you have to master the art of online marketing.
So, in this episode of Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon shares excellent strategies and steps that you can incorporate in your own business. Remember that people can quickly get sick of your gimmick if you come forward to pushy about selling. Start learning about content marketing; it’s cheap, increases your followers, and promises more significant sales numbers. Gordon also introduces the concept of Know-Like-Trust (KLT). Discover how this can help and more when you tune in.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The behaviours of people have changed through the years because of digital innovations, so we have to keep up. There will be new platforms emerging, and the algorithms for search engines and other social media sites have been ever-changing.
Why do we need to do content marketing more than ads? People like it when they are given choices on what to consume (listen, play, read, watch, etc.), rather than they are pushed to do something they don’t want (i.e. pop-up ads).
It’s more appealing to people if they know that they have used their free will to decide on what to click.
KLT – People will buy from someone who they Know, Like, and Trust. To achieve this, they have to keep seeing you WITHOUT being too pushy.
Make sure that the content you post has a call to action, not just trying to sell. Example: What results are the students getting? How fun is the experience? What are the benefits?
BEST MOMENTS
“You’re gonna have to be persistent, be disciplined, and have consistency with what you’re doing, but then, you’re gonna have some results from it.”
“Content marketing is the cheapest and fastest way that you’ll get your message out there.”
“People buy the results.”

There’s no room for idling and going back when you want to grow your martial arts business. So, how do you make sure that you’re always in momentum?
In this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon gives you a rundown of what you could do so you can create and maintain your momentum in growing your business. If you want to be successful, you have to do whatever it takes to keep your energy and focus high. Stay motivated in achieving your goal so that there’s constant progression. If you have to remove everything that brings toxicity, then do it. If you have to change your daily routine, then do it. There’s a lot more to learn from Gordon today, so listen in.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Always be in the right mindset, mind your values, and have a belief system that works for you. When we refuse to act ourselves, we tend to forget our WHY and get easily affected by negativity.
For you stay focused and driven, you have to learn how to deflect all the negativity and toxicity. Don’t let anyone hold you back.
Technology can also interrupt your flow. All the notifications you get from your phone in the middle of a meeting and even on rest days. Gordon suggests you minimise your exposure to gadgets and just to touch them when you’re ready to deal with work.
What you do in the morning will affect how you hustle the whole day. If you do things that will prepare for whatever comes your way, then it’s highly likely you’ll get the best outcome. Go for a run and load up on healthy food so you can perform well.
BEST MOMENTS
“It’s important to continue the momentum we create in our business and create velocity because that’s how you gonna gain massive traction.”
“We can’t change them, but what we can change is the way that we react to it.”
“If you allow people to interrupt you, they’re gonna interrupt you.”
“Massive action; massive results.”

There’s so much noise online, so how do we make sure that your voice not only reaches the ears of the people but also stays with them once they get off the Web?
In this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon urges you to shake things up in your marketing scheme. Discover why you should have a mix of traditional and digital marketing tactics to reach and maintain a broader audience. The most important thing that can set you apart in the digital age is always to close it with face-to-face meet-ups. Human connection is something that has been taken lightly lately by businesses because yes, it is social marketing that booms. But, if you really want to reap all the rewards you do in your social media platforms, get out, meet them in person, and connect with them at a deeper level.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Humans cannot survive this modern world alone. We need to build connections with other people for our personal development and career growth.
For your MA school to thrive in the next couple of years, you have to establish your online presence since most are on digital media. But Gordon advises to not rely on it solely. Don’t let go of the traditional sales and marketing schemes fully.
Use the online platforms for scouting initial contacts. Then, go straight for getting their contact information. Get them on the phone and schedule a face-to-face meet-up.
When you build your community of followers, it’s important to earn their trust first. Show how credible you are and why you are their best option.
Visit conferences, training centres, school assemblies, etc. so you could meet and mingle with the martial arts community. This creates exposure and could be an avenue to build possible long-term relationships. If they’ve seen your ads online, it’s easier to approach and have a chat since your ads have left a mark on them.
Use online videos to promote yourself. Seeing the person who’ll offer the services is already a big step towards earning trust.
BEST MOMENTS
“There is a massive need for human connection.”
“Get IN the community a lot more.”
“As long that they know they can trust you, they’re gonna choose you.”
“Don’t stop doing social media. Don’t stop doing email marketing. Don’t stop doing YouTube videos. But I really believe that there’s a massive need to be out and get exposure so people can connect with us on a deeper level.”
“To know and not to do is still not to know.”

‘You need to create a fire and keep it going’
How can we use Facebook successfully?
It is like any platform it is continually evolving and being able to use it to market your business effectively is vital
The more money you spend the more people you reach, the more you reach the more people will take action and make an enquiry. The more enquiries you have the more bookings you will have and in turn the opportunity to turn those prospects into customers.
Listen in now to hear the 10 fundamentals that will make the difference to your MA Business.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Create engaging content
Create content that engages your prospective client
The content on your pages should inspire, motivate and create intrigue, debate, questions and conversation.
Regular posting
How regularly are you posting? On Facebook a few hours ago is equivalent to last week.
You can schedule posts for the whole week to ensure that posts are regular. This can be supplemented by extra videos and posts.
Mixing content
Content should be a mix of video and pictures. Pictures create comments but they are reactive often without substance.
Video creates a stronger connection because 85% of our communication is non-verbal.
Real content
People should see content as authentic and real as this will help to establish a connection. What they see on the video should be the same as when they actually visit your MA school.
Consistency
Consistency is the key to everything
What are you doing to make sure you are consistent across all areas of your business.
You need to be consistently consistent
Spam
You can’t spam on Facebook be out there as much as you can.
Concentrate on getting out there and being seen because if you don’t someone else will.
The only way people will come is if they trust you
Retargeting
You create content and engagement and from this, you can retarget the people who’ve engaged with more content.
Fun content
The content you share should be fun not fighting
It must be inviting, fun and help people to be inspired, to think they can do it.
The importance of live video
Live video is about no filters and presenting an authentic view. Prospective customers can see exactly what is going on and can see what to expect.
Share
Share your results, share your successes. You can showcase your students sharing their journey and results. This is key to your strategy.
Success creates leads, results create leads
BEST MOMENTS
‘Live video is the cheapest thing to promote and gets the most organic reach’
‘You are retargeting those who are interested’
‘People are sick of the bullsh#t’
‘You can remove the barriers with video and create a deeper connection’
‘They feel like they know you on a personal level’
‘Wear your heart on your sleeve, people love that’

Businesses should be good at serving, selling, and serving. Yes, all three of them.
If your martial arts business is struggling on how to close deals specially or don’t know how to balance them, then this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast is for you.
Today, Gordon is joined by Matt Elwell, the Co-Founder of The Elite Closing Academy, to talk about increasing and closing your sales. Discover why closing is a big frustration for most salespeople and how you should overcome this fear. There are better ways on how to do the sales process for the best results. Just remember to put your mindset on it. Once you’ve mastered this skill, you’ll be selling and serving more in no time. So, listen in to hear some great strategies from our guest today.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Three key things inside a business, according to Matt:
Serving – Create and contribute value.
Selling – Learn when to sell.
Closing – Seal the deals.
Know the difference between these three. It’s not going to be a success if you one is done half-heartedly. There should be a balance.
A lot of businesses have great business plans in place and execute them effectively not until the last stage, which is closing the deals. 94% of sales people try to sell when they only need to closing you.
There are two ways you can get rid of the consequences of being fearful of serving, selling, and closing:
Upscale yourself. There are resources (online courses, e-books, podcasts, etc.) out there you can try.
More importantly, change your mindset.
“If I want to serve, to create this movement of martial arts that I want to do, I need to learn how to close more people when they’re ready. I need to learn that skill to serve more.” – Gordon
Be transparent in your business. Search for the truth so you could assess what you have been doing. If you accepted or even thought that your product/service need improvement and development, then it’s easier for you to tweak your business plan.
Show certainty in what you’re offering. If they see that you believe in your own services and you show credibility, then closing with them is more probable.
BEST MOMENTS
“Serving is a bit like loving without boundaries. when you love somebody or something without boundaries, it’s completely liberating. It’s the most powerful thing in the world.”
“Selling is serving at the right time.”
“It’s about you. You have to change yourself for this.”
“Search for truth as much as you can when you’re selling and serving.”
