Join Gordon as he discusses how to get the most out of each and every day and why changing the language you use towards yourself can make or break your personal and professional success. Tune in to find out why changing ‘I can’t’ to ‘I haven’t yet learned’ can help you go from strength to strength in your business career, how there should only be ‘do’ and never ‘try’ and why we can only achieve what we truly believe.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
It is really important to look at how you as a leader develops in your business. Ultimately if you are not right then your business will not be right. When you are facing challenges and not feeling motivated you may notice that it negatively affects your business. Every single day in your business is of huge importance, it is the building blocks of what you may aspire to have.
The language that we tend to use needs to change, not just in our minds but out loud too. Stop using the word ‘tried’, when you say that you have tried something you are giving yourself an escape route. Change your mindset to believe that there is no ‘try’ there is only ‘do’.
There are many times when you may have said to yourself ‘I can’t do this’. Change your outlook and your mindset to ‘I haven’t learned this yet.’ When you catch yourself saying these detrimental words you cut off the possibility of you achieving something. Instead of thinking you can’t do something, look at what you need to learn in order to be able to do it.
There is no limit except the one that you impose on yourself each and every day. We must guard the garden of the mind because whether you think you can or you think you can’t you are absolutely right. It is only what we believe is what we will achieve, the question is what do you believe? If you are positive and believe in what you are doing then you will achieve whatever you put your mind to.
We have to be really careful about what we are saying to ourselves. It is really important to change the language we are using, say things such as ‘yes I can’, ‘I will’ and ‘I must.’ Set yourself goals to commit to and tell yourself that you will achieve them. The positive messages that you are feeding your brain with are really important to both your personal and professional success.
BEST MOMENTS
“Every day we are battling ourselves, each other and our minds.”
“You are the leader of you.”
“It is that negative story that will create that negative outcome.”

The current and upcoming global recession is most likely weighing heavy on your mind and has left you wondering how you can grow your business throughout this. Join Gordon as he shares with you his free marketing tips which can allow your business to grow throughout the recession. Learn the importance of following up on old leads, communicating with other local businesses as well as giving back to others in the community.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
You either sign up for the recession or you don’t and that is entirely your choice. The reality is your mindset will outstrip any recession and if you work on growth through a recession then you will come out ten times stronger. It doesn’t matter what kind of industry you are in, the objective is to market and sell through the recession.
You have to have the belief in yourself to be able to pull yourself forwards in the upcoming months and yet be able to smash through this recession. The aim is to not only survive but to absolutely dominate and thrive in these times where great opportunities are presenting themselves.
Follow up on old leads. Those who have shown interest before or who have perhaps utilised free trials are a great source of free marketing to you. Make contact with anybody who has engaged with you or your company over the last twelve months. Utilise social media platforms to reach them and advise them of your new programmes and packages.
Talk to other local businesses about how you can help each other. Perhaps you could come up with an arrangement whereby they promote your business in exchange for you promoting theirs. This is a free marketing tool as it allows you to infiltrate their network. The more you connect with other companies the more data and potential customers you can collect.
Give your services to other people. Look into Facebook groups and local community groups (e.g. weight loss groups) whereby you can offer your services to help people. Offer your services for free to give back to people, if you want to get you to have to give. The participants will then experience what your business has to offer and are therefore more likely to sign up for the full package. This costs you nothing, bar your time.
BEST MOMENTS
“I truly believe that where we are right now is going to be the greatest time for our business.”
“We need to be so focused on the possibilities, on the potential and on the opportunities that lie before us so that we’re not scrimping on marketing.”
“You’re not going to grow if you’re sitting there stagnant. If you want to grow you have to go.”

Is there a checklist for the ultimate success?
There isn’t. But according to Gordon, the baseline is the same for everyone—the first box that needs to be ticked is about introspection. Are you really ready to serve other people? We must look internally first. Because when we feel confident with ourselves, it emanates outside.
Today, on the latest episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, we learn how to be true to ourselves and be attractive. What does Gordon mean by this? How does this help people enrol in your martial arts school? Tune in now to know the answers!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
You have to be attractive. Not the be-pleasing-on-the-eyes attractive kind, but the have-complete-set-of-skills-to-sell kind. You need to build yourself up before you show yourself (and your products & services) to other people.
Law of Attraction. It’s always about the energy you put out. If you give them those half-baked muffins, then most likely, as soon as they eat it, they’ll spew it out. Prepare something that you yourself are excited about and enjoy.
No matter how elegant you dress up or how thick the air the perfume you surrounded yourself with, people can still see what is inside of you. Customers are expert readers; never underestimate them. And if it happens you deceive one, it would be hard to fake it till the very end since it wasn’t truly you who they trusted.
Invest in yourself. Give it all for personal development, because it will have a domino effect on your external activities.
BEST MOMENTS
“You are the person that will make you happen or fail.”
“Look in the mirror and be truly honest with yourself.”
“The story you tell yourself is what it really becomes in the real world.”
“What do I need to do different? What do I need to reshape myself?”

In this episode of the Martial Arts Business Podcast, Gordon discusses the importance of building a martial arts school with freedom. As a business owner, you don’t have to be hands-on all the time. You can have your own time doing the more valuable tasks if you choose to leverage it. That’s right, let the more skilled people do some of your tasks, so you can focus more on growing your Martial Arts School!
The first step in getting back your freedom is to ask yourself: What am I doing every single day in my business? Then, it’s time to list down your answers—every single thing you do every minute of every single day should be jotted down! This will help you determine what tasks are to be leveraged and not.
Discover more about this and how this can help when you listen in!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Religiously account for everything that you do every single day in your business. Use the diary to compute how many hours are wasted. Try exchanging them with more valuable tasks.
Listing everything else down is extremely valuable. You can clearly see what is and what isn’t working in your martial arts school. It can be a great help to you in making the right decisions.
Most likely, some tasks are meant to be leveraged. We feel drained after work because sometimes, work isn’t really at par with our capabilities and expectations. It’s either you know for yourself that you can do something much better or there is someone out there who can do it much better than you.
There will be more important things that you can do with your time. Let others do the less important tasks of yours—like the operational and administrative tasks. Have you thought for yourself that maybe you aren’t really busy? you just don’t use your time wisely?
Choose freedom. Leverage other people, so you can have your time to think more about how you can grow your business.
BEST MOMENTS
“Having choices is very important.”
“Time is one thing that we can’t get back.”
“Most people spend a lot of time on little things that compound over a period of time which are not productive.”
“Get very clear on the things you dislike in your business, on what you’re battling in every business, and on what you want to get done.”

How can a martial arts school attract more prospective students?
Gordon has his marketing conversion funnel that he uses in his MA school. In this episode, he dives deep on its benefits and the levels included in it. There are four parts of the funnel. From top to bottom, they are: attention, prospect conversion, serve, sell & close, and last, service.
This is a very strategic tool that dojos can utilise. We’re in a tough time right now, let’s ensure our presence is bigger than ever. Discover more about the martial arts marketing conversion funnel today on the Martial Arts Business Podcast.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Attention – Marketing Online & Offline, Communication
Send email newsletters and post quality content regularly on your social media platforms. These will give visuals to your company.
Communicate with previous and current clients, aside from the new prospects. You will never know who might need your services again.
Prospect Conversion – Talk, Engage, Communicate, Build Rapport
Once you get their attention, there’s a possibility that they’d ask for more information. Grab the opportunity to be presentable during this recruitment process. Engage and build a strong rapport with them. First impressions last in the business, remember that.
Serve, Sell, Close – Service, Classes, Experience, Value
If they decided already that they want to try your service, then congratulations on that accomplishment! But before patting yourself on the back, ensure that you CAN and you will give them a great service. Make it memorable and worth their time and money.
Service – Talk, Engage, Communicate, Build Rapport
Provide an excellent service so you can keep them, and gain more! Most likely, it’s from them that you’ll get great feedback and reliable recommendations.
BEST MOMENTS
“People are consuming content at a faster rate than ever.”
“We’re in a busy world. We have to remember that people don’t take actions right away.”
“Their marketing gets attention and triggers an inquiry but what they don’t do is log the inquiries of everybody.”
“Your business starts from the attention you get, the marketing, and the exposure to your brand.”

Gordon talks to fellow academy founder, teacher and actress, Zara Phythian, about the value of video in marketing your school, and the many creative ways in which you can use it to create a deeper sense of trust between you and your target audience.
Key Takeaways
Zara has been in martial arts for over twenty-five years, opening her first academy in 2007. Her passion lies now in teaching, as well as acting as a stunt performer in TV and film.
Having a team behind the scenes who work from the same page, and who recognise the goals of the business, is invaluable to any academy.
Video is Zara’s primary form of marketing now, and mainly shot using mobile phones.
Video creates a greater sense of trust between the content creator and the viewer.
People can be scared away from video as they feel as though they have to be the star. But this isn’t the case. Get creative! Find different ways to tell your stories.
Similarly, people can be daunted by the editing of video. Zara has made it her mission to teach the many simple ways of making your videos look astounding through simple, easy-to-learn means.
Best Moments
‘Video goes deeper. You create a deeper connection with people’
‘People know what they like because they like what they already know’
‘Connection is what people want now’
‘If I can do this, then people out there definitely can’

‘These elements are the business essentials that you can build your martial arts school on’
Gordon shares great advice on essential business steps that should be part of any Martial Arts school’s process and routine daily, weekly and monthly to build business growth.
If you are starting out or wanting to grow your business these 5 business essentials are the elements that together are all you need to grow successfully.
This is a great episode packed with valuable content for any Martial Arts School Owner, listen in and find what the essentials are and why they will work.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Promotion
There has never been an easier time to promote your business with the emergence of social media.
Promotion results in awareness that means people start to ask questions about you and your business and brings the opportunity to serve.
People will access your social media to help them make a decision about whether to get in contact with you.
Serving
Serving at the highest level is finding out what they want, what is the reason they have got in touch?
What people want is more important than what you want to give them.
Serving is about helping people get what they want not what you want to give them.
Selling
Selling is the teaching, the service and the communication. It’s what you do, the environment, the way you are and the rapport you are building.
Being good in these areas with systems, processes and great communication is effective selling. It’s all about how the experience and interactions make your prospective student feel.
Closing
The closing is the point at which you bring people into your school, where they commit to a course of action. They’ve experienced your classes; you know what they want and they’ve had a great experience so it’s important you close the sale. It’s a learnt behaviour and you need to get good at it.
Connection
You need to continually connect with your members, students and extended community such as the parents of students. Connection is a powerful part of retention for any Martial Arts School.
Its connection at a human level and creating a connected caring community.
People want to be part of something so building connection and community will cement all the elements of your business together.
BEST MOMENTS
‘You need to be out there so much that you are the first person they think of when they want to buy’
‘Assume they are going to want to join your Martial Arts School and be confident in your service being the best’
‘The more you connect with people, the more you will retain’

Change can be a tough thing to embrace, as we are all creatures of habit. But fortune favours the brave, and success tends to follow the people who risk that necessary change in search of growth.
In this week’s important episode, Gordon talks you through the factors that might be inhibiting your own growth, and issues a challenge that may change your entire life.
Key Takeaways
Without change we cannot grow. Fear keeps us rooted to the spot for much of our lives. But true development only comes when we embrace the new, and move towards it.
It’s very easy to stay in our comfort zone, as it is usually the safest place to be. But this static through-line never leads to growth.
In martial arts, Gordon often sees schools slowly deteriorating over time, as they are not led by people with vision. They seem to be stuck in the same mindset as they were when they began.
The constant input in our lives, whether through literature, podcasts, or even through the company we keep, is the fuel that fires our creativity, and subsequently our desire for change and growth.
Look at the results in your own life. Look at what you achieve in business and life. Are you happy with everything? What could you change in order to make those results and achievements perfect to you.
People can often be negatively affected by those who change and grow. It’s important to not let this negativity affect you. Embrace the fact that you are developing.
It’s fine to ask for outside help in order to change. Identify the things that need to change, and if you need to ask for help, then do it!
Best Moments
‘Change needs to happen’
‘We’re living in a world of fear’
‘Without change you can’t grow’
‘I’m changing every day!’
’The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome’
‘Part of this is being brutally honest with yourself'

Most people use Facebook to post pictures or chat to their friends, but there’s a whole world of untapped potential there too, especially if you want to promote your martial arts school!
Gordon has a wonderful tip for all you Facebook users; one that’ll help you to boost your school’s visibility in no time. It’s simple, quick, effective, ingenious, and best of all free to use. Listen in on this week’s show to find out what it is...
Key Takeaways
Facebook’s algorithm loves a share, a like/love and a comment. All of these engagements have a points value to them, that contribute to the algorithm.
Facebook uses its algorithm to determine whether a user has engaged with your content previously in any way. If they have, your content will be better served to that user.
The reason the same people seem to Like and Comment on your posts again and again, is because of the algorithm. The more they engage, the more they’ll see your posts.
A thought-provoking topic, boosted to your fans, will kick-start engagement. This will, in turn, cause your content to be seen by your fans.
Post a picture of the children you teach, lined up in a row, and then message your users to tell them to interact with the pictures of their children. Once the parents have commented about how much the school means to them, you can change the headline of the post to a more ad-centric one, in order to turn their comments into testimonials.
Competitions are an easy way to get your fans to engage. Offering a prize in exchange for likes and shares will get those fans clicking in no time!
Best Moments
’This tip will help you to think about using Facebook a little differently’
’Sharing is massive!’
’The reason they’re not engaging is because they can’t see it. The reason they’re not seeing it is because they’re not engaging. It’s crazy!’
‘It’s understanding the algorithm and the way to play the game’
